Russian Coins Sell For US$5,364,428 in New York

0
0
On 9 January 2014, an auction of Russian coins, orders and medals held by Baldwin’s, in association with Dmitry Markov Coins and Medals and M & M Numismatics realised US$5,364,428.

Struck to commemorate the 30th Birthday of Tsar Alexander II’s fourth son Grand Duke Vladimir, an 1876 25 Roubles topped The New York Sale, Auction XXXIII and was purchased for US$380,250. The proof-like gold 25 Roubles is one of only four large gold coin types issued by Imperial Russia. Of the four, the 25 Roubles coin is the rarest and most elusive, as only 100 pieces were struck.

Tsar Alexander II

25 roubles

Vladimir was president of the Academy of Arts and a famous Patron to many artists. His military career was tarnished after the Bloody Sunday massacre in 1905, when hundreds of unarmed protesters were killed outside the Winter Palace as they marched to present a petition to Tsar Nicholas II. Although he was away from the city at the time and claimed no responsibility, Vladimir’s reputation never recovered.

This rare commemorative issue was from the collection of Åke Lindén, a man of international stature who’s aim was to own an example of every type coin, from every county in the world, since 1850. Born in Stockholm, his passion for coin collecting was inspired by his father who travelled widely all over the world, bringing back different coins from each country he visited. The New York Sale included the first coins from his collection to be offered and Baldwin’s are extremely proud to be presenting his entire collection of world coins as part of their 2014 auction calendar in London and Hong Kong.

An important piece of Russian financial history was included in the Lindén Collection. An 1876 Imperial 10 Roubles attracted some competitive bidding and was purchased for US$351,000. The coin was produced as part of a set of major currency reforms, which were designed by famous Russian Finance Minister Sergei Witte to stabilise and place the Russian Rouble on the gold standard.

Also included in the reforms, and from the Lindén Collection, was an 1895 Half Imperial 5 Roubles which sold for US$234,000. Witte issued the series of special dual denomination gold coins to huge success, providing stability and stimulating economic development.

Sold as part of the famous 1981 Schweizerischer Bankverein auction a gold medal produced in 1913, on the 300th Anniversary of the Romanov Dynasty, was purchased in this sale for US$315,900. The medal brought the highest price of any Russian medal or coin in the Schweizerischer Bankverein auction. It is one of only a few known to exist in gold.

The house of Ramanov was the second and last Imperial dynasty to rule over Russia, which ended with the forced abdication of Tsar Nicholas II and the start of the Russian Revolution. The medal depicts the conjoined busts of Nicholas II and Michael Feodorovich, the first Russian Tsar of the dynasty.

Other valuable pieces of Russian history, this time from the Soviet Union, included a unique 1925 Prototype Order of the Red Banner of Labour of Ukraine, type 2 which sold for US$351,000 It was established by the Fifth All-Ukrainian Congress of Soviets in 1921 as an award to honour great deeds and service to the state and to society, however, the order was never commissioned.

The auction was held alongside The New York Sale XXXII of Ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine and World Coins at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel during the 42nd New York International Numismatic Convention. For full results from the auction please visit www.baldwin.co.uk

On 24 January 2014, Bellmans Auctioneers sold a collection of 200 coins for £30,000 in their monthly sale of a large and varied collection of coins at their office Wisborough Green, West Sussex. The collection made up over fifty lots and contained coins spanning a massive range of dates and locations; from early Roman Empire examples, to Ottoman pieces from the reign of Abdul Hamid I, and beyond. This unique collection was privately consigned by a Sussex family, having been passed down their generations for over a century.

Victoria

Particular highlights from the Roman Empire coins included a Roman Mint example featuring Marcus Aurelius as Augustus (AD165, illustrated below) which realised £1,100, far surpassing its estimate of £600 to £800, and a gold Solidus Constantinople mint from the era of Arcadius (AD 383), which was bought for £1,150. Successes representing the rest of the world included a Victoria gold Five-Pounds coin from 1887, which achieved £1,400, and a collection of 1888 Victoria silver coins depicting the jubilee head, which realised £1,550; over three times their upper estimate of £450.

Jonathan Pratt, Managing Director of Bellmans Auctioneers, commented “I am delighted by the success of the sale of these impressive historical artefacts. With the advice of our coin consultant it proves that collections of this nature can be sold well outside of London”.

An auction house spokeswoman said the coins were bought by a combination of buyers in the sale room, on the telephone and online, with just two failing to sell.

Bellmans Auctioneers hold monthly Antiques and Interiors sales. For more information please contact their Wisborough Green saleroom on 01403 700858.

Thai coins will be in global market

Thailand commemorative coins will be in global market as part of its effort to boost revenue in the near future. Thailand Treasury Department director-general, Naris Chaiyasoot in its statement via The Bangkok Post said that the Treasury Department is seeking ways to sell Thai commemorative coins oversea.

Thai coin

The global coin market is relatively large and coins from several countries have gained popularity among collectors, director-general Naris Chaiyasoot said.

Thai coins are expected to draw international collectors' interest because of their quality and beauty, he said.

The department has approached Britain's Royal Mint, which has connections with global collectors, to ask for help in selling Thai coins on the international market.

The department recorded 6.39 billion baht in revenue for the last fiscal year ended Sept 30, 2013, exceeding the target by 45%, and most revenue was generated by rental income from land belonging to the Bureau of State Property.

Coin sales contributed 1.76 billion baht to revenue, almost treble the target, due mainly to the launch of a series of commemorative coins.

The department has set its revenue target for this fiscal year at 4.7 billion baht, with 680 million baht expected to come from coin sales.

Its mint has been praised as the most advanced in the Asean region. The department also hosted the 16th Technical Meeting of Mints in Asean, an annual academic conference, last year.

Its mint, set up in 2001, produces everyday coins, commemorative and souvenir coins, royal decorations and made-to-order coins.

1974-D

Aluminum Penny

The rare coin owned by California rare coin dealer Michael McConnell, owner of the La Jolla Coin Shop. McConnell purchased it in September 2013 from realtor Randy Lawrence who inherited the coin decades ago from his late father, Harry Edmond Lawrence who served as Deputy Superintendent of the Denver Mint.

"My father, Harry Edmond Lawrence, was Deputy Superintendent of the Denver Mint when the aluminum cent was struck. When he died in 1980, that coin and others he received over the years were in a plastic sandwich bag. I kept them in that bag in my desk for 33 years, and then they were in the trunk of my car for a month when I moved with my two children and my elderly Mother from Denver to Southern California last August," Randy Lawrence explained.

"I had no idea what that penny was worth," he said with a laugh.

The 1974 aluminum cent was a one-cent coin proposed by the United States Mint in 1973. It was composed of an alloy of aluminum and trace metals, and intended to replace the predominantly copper–zinc cent due to the rising costs of coin production in the traditional bronze alloy.

Between October 17, 1973 and March 29, 1974, there were 1,441,039 aluminum cents dated 1974 struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Another 130,128 pieces were struck between April 12 and May 30, 1974. Only one printed reference can be found about any produced at the Denver Mint.

When the proposed aluminum cent was rejected, the Mint recalled and destroyed the examples. A few of the coins were given to members of Congress and other government officials.

On April 1975, "Washington Merry-Go-Round" newspaper columnist Jack Anderson reported that 14 of the 1974-P aluminum cents were missing from Congressional committee members who received them in March 1974 but did not return them to the Treasury Department.

According to a February 21, 1976 story in Numismatic News, The United States government closed its investigation of any missing 1974 aluminum cents by February 1976 having found, in the government's own words "no evidence of criminal intent" by anyone possessing any of the coins.

McConnell and Lawrence now will share proceeds from a planned auction of the coin by Heritage at the Central States Numismatic Society convention in April, and will be making what they describe as a "six figure" donation from the proceeds to help the homeless in the San Diego area.

50 years of Patrouille Suisse Silver Commemorative Coin

On 30 January 2014, the Swiss Mint has launch a new commemorative coin for coin enthusiasts and collectors, 50 years of Patrouille Suisse Silver Commemorative Coin. The new coin minted to commemorate the aerobatic team of the Swiss Air Force, "the Patrouille Suisse".

Patrouille Suisse

The coin obverse depicts the aerobatic team of the Swiss Air Force with wording "50 years of the Patrouille Suisse" and "1964-2014" around it.

The coin reverse show the country "Confoederatio Helvetica", year "2014" and Face Value "20 Francs".

For the last 50 years, the red and white aircraft of the Patrouille Suisse have been thrilling a wide audience in Switzerland and abroad with their displays at military and civil aviation events. Our Air Force's aerobatic squadron has become a hallmark for Switzerland and its proverbial precision and showcases not only our armed forces, but our country as a whole. To mark the anniversary, the Swiss Air Force is putting on a major flying display in Payerne, AIR 14, on the last weekend of August and the first weekend of September this year. Two other anniversaries are being commemorated at the same time as '50 years of Patrouille Suisse': '100 years of the Swiss Air Force' and '25 years of the PC-7 TEAM'.

Although founded on 22 August 1964, the origins of the Patrouille Suisse date back to 1959. It was at this time that the idea of forming a demonstration team with professional pilots was first pursued. In 1964, as part of the national exhibition in Lausanne and to mark the 50 years of the Swiss Air Force's existence, anniversary displays were put on throughout the country to the delight of hundreds of thousands of spectators. Inspired by the 'Patrouille de France', our aerobatic formation, consisting of four Hawker Hunter Mk58 aircraft, immediately adopted the name 'Patrouille Suisse'. Since 1978, the aerobatic team has consisted of six aircraft. In 1994, the Hunter was replaced by the faster and more manoeuvrable F-5E Tiger II and built-in smoke generators help to boost the dramatic effect. Yet even without the smoke, the daring displays have an almost heart-stopping effect on many a spectator.

Straits Settlements Rare Coins

Which are the rare dates and worth collecting dates for Straits Settlements coins? In this article I will share with you, Straits Settlements Rare Coins list that can get a high price among collectors. The Straits Settlements coins issued between 1871 and 1935 with the inscription of "Straits Settlements" with three series of of coins under the reign of Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and King George V.

Rare Coins

The word "rare" in this article doesn't necessary mean "rare" in numismatic. Non-collectors like to use the word to search for favourite coins that collectors are looking for.

I will try to share the price, mintage and pictures of the scarce coins for quarter cent, half cent, 1 cent, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents and 1 dollar Straits Settlements coins that had been auction by International Auctioneers. I will try to find coins with a third party grading in this list to make sure that the coins in the auction are genuine. Proof and Specimen coins will be excluded in this list.

Even though low mintage is one aspect that make the coin rare, sometimes the coins in that particular year had been recalled and melted for some reasons like rising cost of silver or shortage of copper for ammunition. You can see high mintage for that year but you cannot easily find that coin in people collection.

They're a lot of Fake Straits Settlements coins out there and if you have any of these coins in your collection, the chances that they're fakes coins are very high. If you're buying silver coins via internet, make sure you know How to check for Fake Straits Settlements Coins by just looking at pictures. They're many "Made in China" Counterfeit coins online.

10 Swiss francs Gansabhauet Sursee Coin

0

On 30th January 2014, Swiss mint has issued a new bimetallic commemorative coin featuring an illustration of 'Gansabhauet', an age-old custom practised in the commune of Sursee in Luzern. The 10 Swiss francs Gansabhauet Sursee bimetallic Coin (outer ring in aluminium-bronze, core made of copper-nickel) designed by the artist Thyl Manuel Eisenmann from Lucerne.

Gansabhauet

On St Martin's Day, 11 November, a large number of festivities and traditions are celebrated in Switzerland. A particularly striking tradition is the 'Gansabhauet' in Sursee, where two dead geese are suspended by the neck, one after the other, from a wire rope on a stage erected in front of the town hall. Young men, and occasionally women too, dressed in red cloaks and with a sun mask over their heads, try to sever the goose's neck with a single blow from their sabre. To ensure that this is not too easy, a pointed cap is pulled down over the candidates' faces so that they cannot see anything, the dragoon sabre is blunt and a glass of red wine as well as a few 360° turns are enough to make the participants a little unsteady.

The new 'Gansabhauet' commemorative coin is available in the minting qualities 'uncirculated' and 'polished proof' in a presentation case at our online-shop or from selected coin dealers and banks or via Swiss Mint website www.swissmint.ch. The current effigy 'Gansabhauet' is the third in the series 'Swiss customs' and supplements also the Swiss circulation coins in the 2014 coin set.

Technical Specifications:
Alloy: outer ring in aluminium-bronze, core made of copper-nickel
Weight: 15 g
Diameter: 33 mm
Legal face value: 10 Swiss francs
Date of issue: 30 January 2014

Standard coinage, uncirculated: max. 90 000 coins
Proof coin in presentation case: max. 11 000 coins

With the "Gansabhauet Sursee" commemorative coin, the Swiss mint is continuing the "Swiss customs" series. The previous issues were dedicated to the following customs:
10-franc bimetal coins: 2011 "Bern Onion Market", 2012 "Cow fighting", 2013 "Silvesterchlausen";
5-franc bimetal coins: 1999 "Fête des Vignerons, Vevey", 2000 "Basler Fasnacht", 2001 "Zürcher Sechseläuten", 2002 "Escalade, Geneva" and 2003 "Chalandamarz".

"That the Secretary of the Treasury be, and is hereby authorized, in case he shall think it expedient to procure said notes, or any part thereof, to be engraved, printed, and executed, in such form as he shall prescribe, at the Treasury Department in Washington, and under his direction; and he is hereby empowered to purchase and provide all machinery and materials, and to employ such persons and appoint such officers as may be necessary for this purpose."

The basic face and back designs of all denominations of US paper currency in circulation today were selected in 1929 when the size of the notes was reduced, although they were modified to improve security against counterfeiting starting in 1996. A committee appointed to study such matters made those choices. The only exception is the reverse design of the one-dollar bill. Unfortunately, however, they are no records at US Department of Treasury that suggest why certain Presidents and statesmen were chosen for specific denominations.

According to U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing in 1929, a special committee was appointed by the Secretary of the Treasury to study this aspect of the design. It was determined that portraits of Presidents of the United States have a more permanent familiarity in the minds of the public than any others. This decision was somewhat altered by the Secretary of the Treasury to include Alexander Hamilton, who was the first Secretary of the Treasury; Salmon P. Chase, who was Secretary of the Treasury during the Civil War and is credited with promoting our National Banking System; and Benjamin Franklin, who was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. All three of these statesmen were well known to the American public.

I try to stay away from writing articles on how US Dollar bill related to Freemason since I am not interested talking about it.

The United States 1 dollar bill ($1) is made from cotton and linen blend, with minute red and blue silk fibers running through it to deter counterfeiters. The first U.S. President, George Washington portrait, painted by Gilbert Stuart, is currently featured on the obverse, while the Great Seal of the United States is featured on the reverse.

The $1 dollar bill nickname, "greenback" derives from the Demand Note Dollars created by Abraham Lincoln in the mid 1880s to finance the Civil War. These notes were printed in black on one side and green on the other.
