Counterfeiters make perfect euro coins

Apparently, not only Malaysia rare coins are being counterfeit by Chinese forgers, a bi-metalic coins such as the £2 and euro are also under threat from China-based forgers. The quality of the coins suggested that the gang is producing imitations of near perfect £2 and euro coins.

perfect euro coins

One forgery investigator told The Times: “Counterfeit coins are not of great interest to most jurisdictions, and certainly not on any list of priorities.”

“Many types of counterfeit goods follow this route, China to Italy for further distribution, and it seems an entirely feasible enterprise.”

A spokesman for the Royal Mint stressed that forgeries of £2 coins are not yet though to be commonplace.

"A bi-colour coin is much harder to counterfeit because replicating the two metal components, the inner and outer, is significantly more difficult than a single component coin. Forgers would also require a highly sophisticated press to produce bi-colour coins," said the spokesman.

"The coin detector mechanism of vending machines and self-service check-outs can detect the two different metal components, in addition to the conductivity, thickness and diameter of the coin."

"The addition of edge lettering is also very hard to counterfeit, and some circulating £2 coin designs also include a latent feature in their elements which is difficult to replicate."

The recent report about the major seizure of €556,000 fake euro coins in Italy has raised fears that Britain's £2 could be in the forger's sights.

According to Palermo prosecutor Calogero Ferrara, The 2-euro coins are "a perfect product" that cannot be distinguished from an authentic coin with the naked eye. The 2-euro coins would even have worked in vending machines, he said, adding that the investigation is continuing. police arrested 12 people, including four Chinese nationals, for conspiracy to produce and distribute counterfeit money.

Source: The Telegraph

The recent rumour about fake 10 sen 1971 in the market might be really happening and more high value Malaysia coins will be the next target by the culprit until those concerned take action against them. I can only advise to all, please beware with seller who sell their coins at a very low prices.

Patani tin pitis coins catalog

Congratulations to my numismatic friend, Rusdi Jusoh for the launching of his 1st book "Katalog Pitis Timah Patani" (Patani tin pitis/keping coins catalog) on December 9th. The 45 pages book in pdf format is free for anyone who are interested in Patani Pitis or keping coins. The book is written in Malay.

Patani pitis

What I like about this book is how Mr. Rusdi Jusoh present and explain how we can easily identify the patani coins using a pictorial information. For someone who own some Pitis/keping coins and have little knowledge about the coin, I can easily understand what I need to look for to identify my coins. If the head menu color change to green from gray, that mean the coin have that characteristic.

The book is writen 100% in Malay language without any second language. If you don't understand Malay, this book might not be a good use for you.

Only 30 Patani tin coins are in the book. As the name of this book "catalog", the writer add the coin catalog number on each of the coins as PAT and also catalog number from Saran Singh Encyclopedia of the coins of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei book.

messy book

The only thing I don't like is the over crowded pages and unnecessary ads for his blogspot. It might be normal for other free pdf book to do that but for a coin book, it looks messy and it disturbs the reader views. He don't need to worried that people don't know about his blog url since many readers of all races in Malaysia already knew about his blog. In my opinion, one original coin picture is enough on each page to make it a more neater book. The large coin picture should not be included. The picture and information for the weight and diameter will be better in smaller size or just throw it away since the information are already included on the "Rujukan Pantas" section. On the "Rujukan Pantas" section, the title header should be shown in the new page instead only on the 1st page.

Some of my friends also suggest if he can include the coin price in the future. They also suggest him to make a printed version of his book upon request by buyer. It will help him on the cost to make reasearch for his future books and perhaps less ads for the books.

The 1st edition of the digital book cover Patani (historical region located in northern part of the Malay peninsula or the southern Thai provinces) tin coins that had been used between 1840 until 1897. This book is presented in the form of pictorial information, you can see the information on the coins from the pictures provided.

Ceritera Ringgit (1500-2014)

Dr. Ibrahim Bakar, a well known Malay Sultanate coins writer from Langkawi, kedah has publish a new book "Ceritera Ringgit (1500-2014)". This short book tells the story of Ringgit from 1500 until the current year 2014. The book was launched on 20 December 2014, during Malam Anugerah Numismatik 2014 organized by Kelab Warisan Numismatik Malaysia at Shahzan Inn, Kuantan.

Ceritera Ringgit

Dr. Ibrahim wrote this book to develop short documentation about the history of ringgit. Lack of reference materials on the history of ringgit as the currency makes him feel excited to write about it. He hope this book can help Malaysia numismatic community to earn some knowledge about Ringgit history. He divides the book into four chapters:
1. Ringgit as the trade currency throughout the archipelago (ca. 1520-1904)
2. A piece of paper as Ringgit replacement (1904-1967)
3. Malaysia Ringgit
4. Fractional Ringgit currency (ca.1520-2014)

This short book tells the story of Ringgit from 1500 until the current year 2014. The name Ringgit has been used since 1732 when a milled edge Spanish Dollar coin were introduced. The book cover the history of Ringgit name, the Malaysian Ringgit and Ringgit exchange rates for other currencies.
Published by: MASDINAR (The Malay Sultanate Numismatic Heritage Association, Malaysia)
Date published: 12/20/2014
Edition: 1st Edition
ISBN: nil
Available in paperback
Release Price: RM38
Pages: 102
Language: Malay

I like some of the story in the book that I have never read before like how a Bradbury, Wilkinson & co. ask Bank Negara Malaysia to send them some pictures for Ringgit watermark, the BNM officer saw a tiger skin complete with the tiger head during his visit to his friend house. The tiger he saw has been used as a model for a Ringgit watermark. There are also some other stories that may never been read by some of you.

Chronicles of Ringgit

According to the author of the book, this book originated from a brief documentation notes 'Ceritera Ringgit/The Chronicles of the Ringgit' produced by the authors to accompany the currencies exhibition at the Penang State Museum, Lebuh Farquhar with the same theme Ceritera Ringgit on 1st until 30th June 2007. The currencies exhibition is the first ever held by the author.

The only drawback that I can see in this book is the printing and the paper quality. Some of the coins pictures in this book are not sharp, it look like an old photostat copy. The paper feel like a cheap recycle paper. However, with the increasing cost of printing nowadays, I think most people don't mind as long as the information given can give value to the readers, the information is more important then the book quality itself.

Congratulation to Dr. Ibrahim Bakar for the 'Ceritera Ringgit (1500-2014)' book.

According to a year-end tabulation by the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG), the overall U.S. rare coin market was estimated at about $5 billion. 12 most expensive U.S. rare coins sold for US$1 million or more each at public auctions in 2014.

U.S. Rare Coins

"The prices realized for U.S. coins sold at major public auctions in 2014 totaled nearly $536 million, surpassing 2013's record of nearly $393 million. Several important collections will be offered at auctions in 2015, and I anticipate we'll again see record prices for so-called 'trophy coins' that combine historic significance, rarity and superb condition," said PNG President Terry Hanlon.

"We estimate the overall coin market in the U.S. at about $5 billion in 2014. That includes auctions and private transactions made at coin shows, by mail order, online and at coin stores, but does not include numismatic bullion items or the modern coins sold directly by the United States Mint," explained Hanlon.

8,000 fake €2 coins seized by Spanish police

The Local news has reported that 8,000 fake €2 coins seized by Spanish police in Madrid, Spain and Spanish police arrested three people on Tuesday for allegedly producing up to 12,000 fake €2 coins a month then using them in Madrid's public transport ticket machines.

fake €2 coins

Three home workshops have been discovered by Spanish police in Madrid while the three people responsible for forging thousands of euros worth of €2 coins have been taken into custody.

They made the forgeries using everyday equipment like bottles of gas usually used in camping, precision drills and saws.

From their home workshops they had a capability to produce 12,000 fake coins a month over a period of five years, police said in a statement released on Tuesday.

During the search of the home workshops, police found 8,000 forged coins as well as 400 which were in the process of being made. They also seized moulds used in the making of the coins along with various other tools.

The coins were used in public transport ticket machines and went undetected thanks to their relatively high technical standard. The forgers used the fake coins in ticket machines in different locations around the city and never at the same time to avoid detection.

The three suspects are no stranger to forgeries, already having criminal records for forging 500 peseta coins before the introduction of euro coins and notes in Spain on January 1st 2002.

Treasure hunter found 5251 silver coins

Amateur detecting club, Weekend Wanderers Detecting Club stumbled upon vast hoard of 5,251 silver coins in Buckinghamshire . The hoard of ancient rare Anglo Saxon coins worth more than £1 MILLION has been found buried in a bucket in a farmer's field.

5251 silver coins

This is one of the largest hoards of Anglo Saxon coins ever found in Britain.

Over 100 people attend the Treasure Hunting near Aylesbury, Bucks., during the annual dig on December 21. The perfectly preserved pieces, which feature the faces of Anglo Saxon kings, were in a lead bucket which was buried two feet underground.

Pete Welch, the club's leader for 23 years, said: "They're like mirrors, no scratching, and buried really carefully in a lead container, deep down. It looks like only two people have handled these coins. The person who made them and the person who buried them. Metal detecting is a bit random but most farms have a bit of history so you have a chance of finding something. I think this was a case of you either move to the right or move to the left and on this case our member moved the right way. I'm just hoping that these coins will end up in a museum for the public to see. I wouldn't want to see them go to a private collector."

Anglo Saxon

After they were found archaeologist Ros Tyrrell was called to help excavate them. The coins are in "superb condition" and show the faces of some of the kings of England dating back 1,000 years. They include coins from the reigns of Ethelred the Unready (978-1016 AD) and Canute, or Cnut (1016-1035 AD). Mr Welch believes the hoard is equal in importance to the Staffordshire Hoard of gold and garnets found by a metal detectorist in 2009.

He added: "We don't know how many variations of the coins there are and when we do we will know how significant the find is. This would have been a huge amount of money in its day. One coin alone would have been a lot back then. Everyone dreams of a pot of gold."

Mr. Welch said, "The reality is you spend most of your time digging up bits of junk. This is the first of its kind since I've been running the club, which is 23 years."

A Bucks County Museum spokesman said: "This is one of the largest hoards of Anglo Saxon coins ever found in Britain. When the coins have been properly identified and dated, we may be able to guess at why such a great treasure was buried."

He added that as the coins are precious metal over 300 years old they fall within the remit of the Treasure Act. They will now be taken to the British Museum for conservation and identification before a coroner will decide whether they are legally treasure. A museum will then be able to bid for the coins with the money from the sale being split between the land owner and the individual who made the discovery.

1652 coin found in Time Capsule

A 1652 Pine Tree Schilling found in a time capsule that was embedded in a cornerstone of the Massachusetts Statehouse when construction began in 1795. It was placed there by Revolutionary era luminaries including Paul Revere and Samuel Adams, governor of Massachusetts at the time.

Pine Tree Schilling
1652 Pine Tree Schilling

When conservators at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston gingerly removed items from the box Tuesday, they found five tightly folded newspapers, a medal depicting George Washington, a silver plaque, two dozen coins, including one dating to 1655, and the seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

While some of the coins appeared corroded, other items were in good condition and fingerprints could be seen on the silver plaque.

The capsule was embedded in a cornerstone of the Massachusetts Statehouse when construction began in 1795. It was placed there by Revolutionary era luminaries including Paul Revere and Samuel Adams, governor of Massachusetts at the time.

The contents were shifted to what was believed to be a copper box in 1855 and placed back into the foundation of Statehouse. The box remained there until it was rediscovered last year during an ongoing water filtration project at the building. The box was actually brass, according to conservators.

time capsule
a metal lid from a time capsule

The oldest coin in the box was a 1652 "Pine Tree Schilling," made at a time when the colony didn't have royal authority to create its own currency. Pine trees were a valuable commodity at the time. The trees were used as ship masts.

Michael Comeau, executive director of the Massachusetts Archives and Commonwealth Museum, said he has seen the coins offered for as much at $75,000, although given the context of this particular coin and the association with Paul Revere and Samuel Adams, the value would likely be much higher.

The newspapers were folded in such a way that the names of the publications weren't always visible, but one might have been a copy of the Boston Evening Traveller -- a newspaper operation that was eventually absorbed into the current Boston Herald.

A portion of one of the papers that was visible showed a listing of the arrivals of whalers from various ports to Boston. Conservators didn't try to unfold the papers.

Pam Hatchfield, the head of objects conservation for the museum, removed each item using a slew of tools including her grandfather's dental tool. Hatchfield said the paper in the box was in "amazingly good condition."

Massachusetts state Secretary William Galvin said he expects the items will be on display at the museum for a period of time, but that eventually they will again be returned to the foundation to be discovered by a future generation of Bay State residents.

Galvin said he didn't know if modern items might be added to the foundation.

Comeau said the objects in the box are a bridge back in time.

"This is the stuff of history," he said.

On 13 January 2015, The Central Bank of Ireland will launch a €15 limited edition silver proof commemorative coin to honour Nobel Laureate Ernest Walton and his ground-breaking achievements in the field of physics.

Walton coin

To mark this occasion, the Central Bank has collaborated with the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition on a special award for 2015 in recognition of Walton’s achievements. The winners of the award will be announced at the Exhibition tomorrow, Friday.

The award winners will receive a coin which was designed by artist Rory Breslin and which has an issue limit of 6,000 units.

Director of Credit Institutions, Sharon Donnery, said, “This is the second in our Science and Invention series and honours one of Ireland’s great Nobel Prize winners, Ernest Walton. Walton, with John Douglas Cockcroft, shared the 1951 Nobel Prize in Physics for their pioneering work on the transmutation of a nucleus by artificially accelerated atomic particles. The design on the coin gives an artist’s impression and explanation to the equation we all know, E="mc2. The Central Bank is also delighted to support the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition Awards and young Irish scientists through sponsorship of this award.”

The limited issue coin will be launched on 13 January 2015 and orders will be despatched shortly after the launch. Coins go on sale to the general public from 14 January 2015.

Ernest Thomas Sinton Walton (6 October 1903 – 25 June 1995) is Ireland’s only Nobel Laureate for science, he get his Nobel from his work with John Cockcroft with "atom-smashing" experiments done at Cambridge University in the early 1930s, and so became the first person in history to artificially split the atom, thus ushering the nuclear age.

Birch Cent

The coins were sold in a special session held by Heritage Auctions as part of the official auction of the Florida United Numismatists (FUN) Convention at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL.

The Donald G. Partrick Collection Part I Realizes $25.93 Million At FUN. Future sales of The Partrick Collection are planned in conjunction with the ANA Convention in 2015 and the FUN and ANA Conventions in 2016.

"There are not enough superlatives to describe how extraordinary this collection is," said Jim Halperin, Co-Founder and Co-Chair of Heritage Auctions. "It is, quite simply, the finest grouping of American colonial coins ever assembled and the numismatic world will never see another like it. This is a pedigree that will endure in perpetuity and, judging by the incredible prices and the very spirited bidding, the top collectors in the hobby fully understood that."

Further highlights include, but are certainly not limited to:

1792 Eagle-on-Globe Copper Quarter Dollar MS63 NGC CAC realized $2,325,500.

"There are only two known examples of this coin, with one of them held by the National Numismatic Collection. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the smart collector who seized the moment."

World Most Expensive Penny-1792 Birch Cent

A 1792 Birch Cent has set a new record for The World Most Expensive Penny when the penny coin sold for $2,585,000.00 (including buyer premium) in a public auction conducted by Heritage Auctions on on Thursday night, Jan. 8, 2015. The old record held by a 1943-dated Lincoln cent incorrectly struck in a copper alloy at the Denver Mint sold in 2010 for $1,700,000 by Legend Numismatics of Lincroft, New Jersey.

1792 Birch Cent

The coin from the The Donald G. Partrick Collection were sold in a special session held by Heritage Auctions as part of the official auction of the Florida United Numismatists (FUN) Convention at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL.

Another penny, 1793 Chain Cent sold for $2,350,000 in a public auction conducted by Heritage Auctions on Jan 7, 2015 in Orlando, Florida.

Chain Cent

"This copper cent is about as large as a modern quarter-dollar. It is quite rare because the controversial design on the back was quickly changed soon after production of the coins was started in March 1793 at the Philadelphia Mint," explained Greg Rohan, President of Dallas, Texas-based Heritage Auctions.

"It's called a 'Chain Cent,' because the tail's side design prominently shows a chain with 13 linking rings to symbolize the unity of the original 13 colonies. However, critics at the time claimed it evoked an image of slavery, so the design was quickly changed with a wreath replacing the chain," said Rohan.

"Bidding for the 1793 Chain Cent opened at $1, and the winning bid of $2,350,000 is a world's record for any penny. There were gasps and then applause from the more than 100 people attending the auction when the bidding ended. The buyer was not present, though. He's a long-time, avid coin collector who wants to remain anonymous, and he placed his bid online," revealed Rohan.

The Royal Canadian Mint has launch a two-dollar circulation coin celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald. The coin was unveiled today at Sir John A. Macdonald community birthday celebrations in Kingston.

John A. Macdonald

"Today we are celebrating the Right Honourable Sir John A. Macdonald, an architect of Canada's Confederation and one of our country's most important political figures," said the Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Finance and Minister responsible for the Royal Canadian Mint.

"His profoundly influential story as a historic nation-builder and fierce defender of our values and borders now has a permanent place on a circulation coin which will touch Canadians from coast to coast to coast."

"The Mint is proud to share great Canadian stories, including the remarkable Sir John A. Macdonald on our coins," said Marc Brûlé, Interim President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint.

"As Canada counts down to the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017, the Mint will continue to honour people and events which have shaped our nation and we will soon ask Canadians to actively participate in our program."

The coin's reverse image was designed by Canadian artist Glen Green and is inspired by archival photographs of Sir John A. Macdonald. A Beverly Hills collector pay $4.8mil for 26 cents coins at an auction in Orlando Thursday. Kevin Lipton who own Kevin Lipton Rare Coins at Beverly Hills, CA paid $2,232,500 for a 1792 quarter and $2,585,000 for the 1792 Birch Cent, World Most Expensive Penny bought in public auction.

1792 birch

The coins were sold in a special session held by Heritage Auctions as part of the official auction of the Florida United Numismatists (FUN) Convention at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL.

Kevin Lipton name as a winner were mentioned by The Los Angeles Times.

“It’s like our very first penny,” Lipton, 55, told the Los Angeles Times on Sunday. “It’s such a spectacular coin. It’s so important, so rare.”

The coin is among 10 similar coins known to exist that were experimentally produced after the founding of the U.S. Mint, said Jim Halperin, co-chairman of Heritage Auctions.

It features a profile face representing Miss Liberty, framed by a motto that was later abandoned, “Liberty Parent of Science & Industry.”

Lipton, who owns a coin wholesaling business in Beverly Hills, had been eyeing the Birch Cent since he saw it in 1981 at a New York auction house. That year, Johns Hopkins University consigned the penny for auction, and it was purchased by New York City developer Donald G. Patrick for $200,000. Patrick consigned the coin to Texas-based Heritage Auctions.

At the Orlando auction where he picked up the Birch Cent, Lipton also bought a quarter dollar from 1792 for a mere $2,232,500. All told, he paid about $4.8 million for 26 cents.

Lipton has collected coins since he was 12 years old, and his full-time coin business launched when he was just 17.

He conceded that he was nervous about plunking down so much, but he's confident his million-dollar coins will mature.

"They are a great store value, and will only be worth more in the future," Lipton said. "They are literally Mona Lisas of our coinage."
