Do you know what is Malaysia rare coins or Malaysia rare key dates that most collectors are looking for? If you expect that their prices can go up for over 1 million ringgit, please don't read this post. You will be disappointed with the low price for rare coins of Malaysia.

For all my collector friends. The word "rare" in here is not about rare in numismatic. Please don't message me and tell me that I wrongly used the words 'rare'. If you want to use that word 'rare' properly, can you give me one Malaysia coin that can be put as a rare coin?

Rare Coin

Last time when I were actively looking for coins in the flea market, I can still find Malaysia key dates coins with a reasonable price and high grade condition. Nowadays, it is almost impossible to find some of them in any flea market because they're many collector around.

Here is a list of Malaysia rare coins/Key dates/Semi keydate coins:

1 sen 1968
Malaysia 1 sen 1968 coin, only 10,500,000 approved mintage.

Malaysia 1 sen 1970 coin with only 2,535,000 approved mintage. 1 sen 1970 coin were minted by Hamburg Mint, in Germany. Normal planchet for this coin is Copper but they're 1 sen 1970 Copper Clad Steel Pattern exist. So far, 4 known pieces has been traced, two pieces in Malaysia (One UNC,One GVF),One piece in Singapore, graded MS63RB and the last piece in oversea. You can read more about it in Sifu Dickson Niew post; 1970 sen Pattern Steel Clad Coin. For your information, this coin also have two different variety.

1 sen 1973
Even though, they're over 21 million pieces of coins minted for 1 sen 1973, you can still find some extra value from coins made from Copper Clad Steel, normal coins were made from Copper. You only need to check them with magnet and if your coin stick to that magnet, that is the coin we are looking for.

1 sen 1976
Normal 1 sen 1976 coins are made from Copper Clad Steel but they're few Copper planchet coins found by collectors and Steven Tan in his book wrote that less then 100pcs coins known to exist. On 27 March 2013, Malaysia 1 sen 1976 were Auction by Monetarium Singapore for SGD$2,600 (excluding tax and commision). The coin graded By Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) as Bronze: 1-Sen 1976 (KM1) PCGS MS65 RD. To learn how you can check for genuine 1 sen 1976 coin, you can read it in my post; How to detect 1976 1sen copper coin.

5 sen 1997
Malaysia 5 sen 1997 coin, only 7,703,850 approved mintage.

5 sen 2004
Malaysia 5 sen 2004 coin, only 11,520,000 approved mintage.

10 sen 1971
I think almost everyone including non collectors already knew that this coins is one of the most sought after coins in Malaysia Numismatic. The 32,236 approved mintage is a mystery itself since Bank Negara Malaysia never give a very low mintage permission before. They are few theories why only 32,236 pieces were minted; Malaysia 10 sen 1971 coin story. When the story about 10 sen 1971 coin varieties came out, many people start to look for the 1st variety since most collectors don't have them. The price for the 1st variety is higher then the 2nd variety but it is not that easy to find the 1st variety. Many collectors still don't know how to check for the varieties and some are selling the 2nd variety as the 1st variety.

10 sen 1994
Malaysia 10 sen 1994 coin, only 7,122,222 approved mintage.

10 sen 2003
Malaysia 10 sen 2003 coin, only 8,640,000 approved mintage.

20 sen 1970
With only 1,054,000 approved mintage by Bank Negara Malaysia, 20 sen 1970 minted by Hamburg Mint, in Germany is one of the key dates in Malaysia Numismatic.

20 sen 1971
Malaysia 20 sen 1971 coin, only 9,958,419 approved mintage.

20 sen 1978
Malaysia 20 sen 1978 coin, only 6,847,062 approved mintage.

20 sen 1994
Malaysia 20 sen 1994 coin, only 2,680,339 approved mintage.

Mavin International Auction 35 Session 1 Highlights are mostly a collection of Straits Settlements coins from the Eric Low Collection. Eric Low Eng Wan, or just Eric Low as he is better known to fellow coin collectors, focused his entire collecting interest on Straits coins for over 18 years. From the very beginning, Eric collected the better quality Straits coins that he came across and could afford, whether in coin shows or auctions or by private treaty. Over the years he was able to acquire many gems, mostly in auctions from various fine collections, including those of R J Ford, Ng Yit Boon and John Jay Pitman, just to mention a few. As Eric now feels that he has enjoyed his collection long enough, he has decided that it is time to let others have the opportunity to enjoy them as well, and Mavin is happy to auction the major part of it in two parts. All coins are graded and encapsulated by NGC or NCS in their new Edgeview® Holders.

Minted by the Royal Dutch Mint, the commemorative coin will be issued in circulation quality in rolls of 25 coins each, each roll selling at the price of €70. A limited number of this coin was also issued in proof quality, selling at the price of €15 per coin.

Malta coin

The theme of this coin is ‘Self-government – 1921’. The coin reverse shows the common €2 side while the obverse (national side) depicts a map of the Maltese islands and a representation of the Maltese population designed by the Maltese artist Ġanni Bonnici.

Malta was granted a form of self-rule by the British government in 1921, in the aftermath of the First World War and the socio-economic hardship it left in its wake. Although Britain retained direct control over various key administrative functions, the new constitution granted Malta increased powers of self-government including an elected Cabinet of Ministers which for the first time became responsible for the administration of local affairs.

The coins will be available from the Malta Coins Distribution Centre at the main building of the Central Bank of Malta. For further information, you can contact the Malta Coins Distribution Centre by an e-mail to mcdc@centralbankmalta.org or by calling (+356) 2550 6006/6007.

An 1893-S Morgan Dollar MS64 NGC, from the famously low mintage of any regular issue Morgan, brought $235,000 to take top lot honors at Heritage Auctions' U.S. Coin Signature® Auction Nov. 1-3 in New York. High-grade silver coinage, gold rarities, and a 1943-S Bronze cent achieved the top prices at the event, which realized $11,353,383 with post-auction buys ongoing.

Morgan Dollar

"This was a deep auction with many coins performing well," said Greg Rohan, President of Heritage Auctions. "When key rarities in high grades came up for bid, prices were strong regardless of series."

S Morgan

Leading the way was the 1893-S Morgan dollar, as eight bidders drove the price of the near-Gem example to $235,000. The 1893-S dollar's translates to a small supply that has to meet huge collector demand, particularly in Mint State grades.

Two more silver coins were close behind. An 1839 No Drapery half dollar, PR64+ PCGS Secure, CAC, is one of only five known proof examples and realized $223,250. A 1799 silver dollar with 7x6 Stars Obverse, B-12b/BB-160 variety, MS65 NGC, CAC, realized $211,500.

A pair of 19th-century gold highlights round out the top five prices realized. An 1861-S double eagle with Paquet Reverse, AU58 NGC, brought $176,250. An 1854 three dollar gold piece graded PR64+ Cameo PCGS, CAC, went for $164,500.

"As with silver, the top gold lots show the importance of quality and rarity together," said Rohan. "The 1861-S Paquet double eagle is one of the finest available and that showed in the price. Likewise, the proof 1854 three dollar was a very rare coin from the year it was struck, but it was condition that sent the price so high."

A 1943-S Bronze cent, struck in a copper alloy instead of steel and the top seller in The Geyer Family Collection, realized $141,000. An 1849 Mormon twenty dollar gold piece, Genuine PCGS, enjoyed pre-auction publicity from Salt Lake City's NPR affiliate and brought $85,187.50.

Malaysia 1st series of "SEN" coins were introduced in 12 June 1967 in denominations of 1 sen, 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen, 50 sen, followed by the introduction of the 1 ringgit coin (which continued to use the $ symbol and is the largest coin in the series) in 1 May 1971. Even though the new Parlimen coins has been used, the coins and banknotes for Board of Commissioners of Currency Malaya and British Borneo still circulated with new Malaysia coins until 16 January 1969, when the old Malaya currency legal tender value has been ceased.

parlimen coin

The initial under the parlimen building is exactly an initial for Geoffrey Colley, Malaysia Parlimen coin designer. Some people mistakenly think the initial is for "Government Coin". While, some sellers will tell you that a parlimen coins without a GC initial have a higher price then your normal coins. They will tell you that it is a rare variety because it don't have a "Mint Mark". Parlimen coins without GC initial are just normal error coins with a weak dies. You can easily find them if you keep a lot of Parlimen coins.

On the obverse of the coins for 1 sen, 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen and 50 sen show Malaysia Parliament building as a symbol of democracy. A crescent moon and 13 pointed star is taken from the flag of Malaysia, representing Malaysia as an Islamic nation and 13 states in Malaysia. The design for ringgit coin is a little bit different from other coins; crescent moon and the pointed star is bigger with 14 pointed star (13 states and a federal territory). On the reverse show the denomination printed in the middle and hibiscus, the national flower of Malaysia at the side.

How to detect 1976 1 sen copper

$

Do you know how to detect a 1976 1 sen copper that is more valuable from the rest of the 1 sen 1976? Believe it or not, on 27 March 2013 the rare coin saw a realized price of SGD$2,600 (excluding tax and commission) during Monetarium Singapore Auction. The rare coin graded By Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) as Bronze: 1-Sen 1976 (KM1) PCGS MS65 RD. When you convert the price to ringgit, the price is approximately RM$6,452 (excluding tax and commision).

Most non-collectors think that all 1 sen 1976 coins are valuable to coin collectors. For your information, you need to check the coin with magnet first before you ask how much the value of your coin. The coin get a very high price because it is a wrong planchet error or mistakenly mint on a wrong metal. The original planchet is made of Copper Clad Steel.

So far, only around 100 pieces of copper 1 sen 1976 coins were found by collectors and most of them in a low grade condition. The best known grade so far for this coin is graded by NGC MS 66 RD. This is one of the most valuable coins in Malaysia circulation coins, you can read more about them in my post; Malaysia Rare Coins.

Copper-clad steel 1 sen will show a strong magnetic attraction.

I hope this will help many of you who had been asking about this coins.

On Tuesday, an ancient Gold Coins found in Banda Acheh, Indonesia. A chest containing hundreds of Acheh gold coins dating back to an ancient Aceh kingdom were found by an oyster gatherer when they're looking for oysters in a swampy area in Gampong Pande village, Banda Aceh. The gold coin chest was discovered near an ancient cemetery destroyed by the 2004 tsunami.

Acheh Gold

The oyster gatherer who found the coins was unaware that the chest was filled with gold coins. Hundreds of gold coins spilled out when she broke the chest. When the news about ancient gold coins found at the Gampong Pande village, hundreds of people from around the place were quickly on the scene, they came with tools to search for gold coins on the riverbed and swamp near the ancient tombs.

Several gold traders and coins trader were also at the site buying the coins from the residents. For small gold coins they were buying it for IDR350,000 and IDR800,000 for the larger gold coins.

The Gampong Pande village was the location of the first Islamic kingdom of Aceh; Aceh Darussalam kingdom. From the 13th to the 17th century, Gampong Pande village evolved into an industrial area, becoming a center producing various goods, including gold coins, thus its name. Gampong Pande literally means “village of the expert or master craftsman”.

Pasar Warisan Seremban or pasar karat in Seremban is located along Jalan Utam Singh, Seremban. It operates every Sunday from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm. This flea market at Jalan Utam Singh has been opening since 1st May 2008. The previous Seremban flea market open at Jalan Lee Sam. This is my first hunting trip at this place (11 July 2010) after reading about it in Fazil Numismatic Blog.

Pasar Besar

Seremban map

I am not very familiar with Seremban and not much detail about this flea market in the Internet but I manage to find it after asking people around (near Seremban) for about one hour. The easiest ways to find this place are to look for Pasar Besar Seremban, Bank Simpanan Nasional or Maybank in Seremban town. If you're asking about Jalan Utam Singh or Pasar Karat, u most probably will be end up like me, received almost similar answer "tak tahu" (Don't know). Look like most people in Seremban don't know that this flea market even exist. Parking is not a big problem since not many people coming to this flea market. This market is under Seremban Municipal Council jurisdiction and Sunday is a free parking day.

This market are selling various items such as handicrafts, antiques, pottery, used computer, old books, flowers, bonsai, dry food, decorations, wall paintings and traditional herbs at reasonable prices. I can only spotted 5 people selling coins and banknotes at this place. Most of them is selling their item at a higher price. Some even higher then Kuala Lumpur market price. Only 2 person selling their items at a reasonable price and some nice items for people who hunting for collection like me. I manage to find, Terengganu old tin coin (its fake but I get them in a cheap price, will post the story later), 50 half dollar King Edward VII coin and 5 dollars King George Vi banknote sold for RM180. I don't manage to buy that green 5 dollars banknote because at the time when I spot it, the seller busy talking with other customer.

Pasar Karat banknotes

Copper collectibles

Other then that, most of item sell in this place are Malaysia coins & banknotes and some world coins. Some sellers do sell their item at a high price without any chance of bargaining. This flea market is not as good as Penang or Butterworth but still a worth place to visit for your hunting trip. Its just one and half hour drive from Kuala Lumpur. I will most probably making another trip to this place. Anyone of you have been to this pasar karat (Flea market) before?

What coins need to test with magnet

Many non-collectors don't know what coins need to test with magnet. Almost all of them think any Malaysia coins that stick to magnet is a valuable coins for collectors. Today, I want to share with non collectors what Malaysia circulation coins that we as collectors test with magnet.

I divided them according to their coin series, to help non-collectors easily understand what I am talking about in here.

Collectors test coins with magnet to check for wrong planchet errors or in layman terms, coins with wrong kind of metal used to mint them. To make sure you understand, I also shared the official metal used to mint Malaysia coins according to their denominations.

Fake coins collectors check their fake coins with magnet because it is a bit rare to find Malaysia fake coins that can stick to magnet. Most of the time Malaysian counterfeiters are using cheap metal to make the fake coins, only old fake coins used metal that stick to magnet because their price are still cheap in the old days.

Kijang Emas Gold Bullion History

Do you know who minted Malaysia Gold Bullion Coins, Kijang Emas? The Kijang Emas is minted by the Royal Mint of Malaysia and distributed by Malayan Banking Berhad. On 17 July 2001, the gold bullion was launched by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the former Prime Minister of Malaysia. The date marked the beginning of history for Malaysia as one of the country in the world to issue its own gold bullion coin.

The design of the obverse of the Kijang Emas depicts a barking deer ("kijang") in its natural habitat in the Malaysian jungle.

The reverse side features the hibiscus, the national flower of Malaysia.

Malaysia gold bullion coins are not not issued every year like some other Bullion Gold Coins. I don't think they produced a new bullion anymore since the Royal Mint of Malaysia stop operating. For the past few years when the gold price is rising, they're shortage of Kijang Emas because everyone want to invest in gold.

Tun Mahathir

Many newbies in Kijang Emas collecting believe that the gold coin were produced by Maybank. Actually it is a product of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) under The Royal Mint of Malaysia or now known as Kilang Wang BNM at Shah Alam.

Some people said that The Royal Mint of Malaysia has gone bankrupt, that's why they stop producing new Kijang Emas coins. The Kilang Wang Bank Negara is still there but the management has changed hand from The Royal Mint of Malaysia to Bank Negara Malaysia.

The purchase and reselling price of Kijang Emas is determined by the prevailing international gold market price. The daily market price for this bullion can be found at BNM web site.

You cannot buy the gold bullion directly from Bank Negara Malaysia or Kilang Wang Shah Alam.

Information about 50 sen 1967, 1968 & 1969 coins

Many non collectors who came to my blog have a wrong idea and twisted information about 50 sen 1967, 1968 & 1969. Many of them thought that they can sell their coins for RM10,253 a piece. I already wrote my explanation in Malaysiancoin.com, why that 1969 50 sen Milled Edge can be sold for RM10,253.

50 sen 1967 1968 1969

Some readers who most probably only read the title of the post and straightway jump to their own conclusion, any 50 sen 1967, 1968 & 1969 can sell for a higher price like that coin.

Since I share the news about 1969 50 sen Milled Edge Sold for RM10,253, I received almost 30 emails, Facebook private message, phone called and sms daily. Their questions are almost the same:
How much my coin worth?
Where can I sell my coins?
How can I sell my coins?
Can you sell my coins for me?
I want to sell my 50 sen 1969 for RM10K
Informing me that they have 50 sen 1967, 1968 & 1969 and asking me if I want to buy.

I think many dealers and well known coin collectors also having the same problem as me.

Before we talk any further about these, I want to share with non collectors, Information about 50 sen 1967, 1968 & 1969.

Mintage:
50 sen 1967=15,000,000
50 sen 1968=12,000,000
50 sen 1969=2,000,000

As you can see, they're millions pieces of 50 sen 1967, 1968 & 1969, the coins are not that rare compare to 10 sen 1971 with only 32,236 pieces minted by Bank Negara Malaysia. Everyone in Malaysia can get a piece of the 50 sen 1967, 1968 & 1969 security Edge (50 sen berparit, berlongkang, belah tepi, belah tengah, sisi sekuriti). In laymen term, the coins are not that rare and most people have that coins in their collection.

The coins edge:
Officially, the 50 cent 1967, 1968 & 1969 are released in security edge but they're some coins mistakenly entering the coin circulation with a milled edge. These coins are little bit hard to find and it is almost impossible today to get them from circulation coin that you received from grocery, mamak or nasi lemak makcik.

coin edge

If your 50 sen 1967, 1968 & 1969 is not with a security Edge (50 sen berparit, berlongkang, belah tepi, belah tengah, sisi sekuriti), that mean it is a Milled edge coin. They're only few pieces of Milled edge coins around and they're also fake Milled edge coins made by using real 50 sen. Most of non collectors will only have the security edge coins.

The coin grade:
Grading is about the condition of the coin itself, one of the key factors in determining its value. Coin grading can be a difficult subject for the non-collector. Very Fine (VF), Extremely Fine (EF) and Uncirculated (UNC) are some of the terms used by coin collectors to determine the coin grade. A cleaned coins cannot get a Uncirculated (UNC) or Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) grade, a mistake that most non collectors don't understand.

They're also third party grading company that provide grading service to coins with a fee. Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) are some of the company that are providing Third Party Grading Service.

If you look at NGC coin database, they're only a few of Malaysia coins get a higher grade MS66 and above. You can look at the database from NGC Malaysia coin census for 50 sen 1969 security edge and 50 sen 1969 Milled edge (no security edge) below.

50 sen 1969

From a total of 33 pieces of coins graded for 50 sen 1969 security edge, only 1 piece of coin make it to the MS66 grade and not a single coin from 6 pieces graded so far for 50 sen 1969 milled edge (no security edge) get into the MS66 grade. The best grade for the milled edge is only MS65. The coin that make it to the Malaysia coin record for the most expensive Malaysia coins sold in auction so far is only have a grade of Au-55.

Coin Price:
Since most non collectors only have a coins with a Very Fine (VF), I am only sharing a VF coin price. This Market price list is just a guide for you. Not a must follow buy and sell agreement.

Security Edge/Sisi berparit:
50 sen 1967=RM8
50 sen 1968=RM8
50 sen 1969=RM30

Milled Edge:
50 sen 1967=RM1,800
50 sen 1968=RM1,800
50 sen 1969=RM2,800

Where you can sell your coins?
If you want to get the market price for your coins, the best and the only way is by selling them yourself.

You cannot get a market price by selling them to coin shop, coin dealer or even selling them to me. If you want to sell a 50 sen security edge to any coin shop and coin dealer, they most probably don't want to buy because they have plenty of stock available with them.

You will only get around 30% to 70% of the coin value if you want to sell them to coin shops and coin dealers.

I already shared my tips about how to sell your coins in my blog; Panduan mudah menjual duit lama.

How can you get a high price for your coins?
First of all you need to be lucky since it is hard to get a coin that get a high grade like that and you can only hope people will buy your coins with a very high price.

Secondly, your coins must have a very high grade. Third party grading is an advantage, it might cost you more but it will give you benefit later.

Thirdly, If you want to send your coins for auction. You need to make sure that your coins are in the right auction house. Since we are talking about Malaysia coins, you need to find any auction house that are popular among Malaysia coin collector.
