The coin reverse show a still frame from the iconic scene where Mickey Mouse is seen cheerfully standing at the boats wheel. Wrapped around the top of the collectible coin is the engraved name of this breakthrough cartoon, Steamboat Willie, and the year of its release, 1928. The coin obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Country of Issue - Niue.

An extremely rare 1949 Kweichow 50 Cent with the “Greek border” design realized US$334,600 in the Stack’s Bowers Galleries April 2014 Hong Kong Showcase Auction. The graded AU-58 coin by NGC is considered to be the fractional counterpart of the famous “Bamboo Dollar”. This coin is the highest graded by either PCGS or NGC.

Kweichow 50 Cent

The reverses for the coin displays a large number “50” in the center surrounded by a pearled ring. Just beyond the pearled ring the figure “50” is printed 32 times. Finally, a Greek meander border similar to the obverse is present.

Kweichow coin

The 50 Cents piece displays on the obverse within an inner pearled ring, four Chinese characters that denote: “Half-Dollar Silver Coin.” Above the pearled ring in Chinese characters is the date: “38th Year of the Republic of China” (1949). Two small four petalled rosaces divide this upper legend from the lower, which reads: Made in Kweichow Province.” Surrounding these is the aforementioned Greek meander border.

The Stack’s Bowers Galleries April 2014 Hong Kong Showcase Auction drew the attention of astute numismatists from across the globe. Over $7 million worth of rare coins, banknotes and other Asian numismatic items have found new homes. The April 2014 Hong Kong Showcase Auction featured The Craig Collection and The Arthur Cox Collection of Ferracute Company Archive Materials, among other important collections and consignments.

The following lot, a 20 Cent from the same series, realized $334,600 after much spirited bidding. A 1920 Yuan Shih-kai Dollar struck in gold, ex: Wa She Wong Collection and graded MS-64 (NGC), realized $262,900 — almost double what it sold for in the Stack’s Bowers Galleries December 2010 Hong Kong Auction. A Chihli (Pei Yang) Tael, Year 33 (1907), graded AU-58 by PCGS, brought more than estimated when it realized $149,375 after strong bidder participation.

“The market for classic Chinese rarities has strengthened, and the prices realized show that,” said Kent Ponterio, senior numismatist of world and ancient coins for Stack’s Bowers Galleries. He noted that the Szechuan Pattern Dollar struck in brass and graded Specimen-61 (PCGS) from The Arthur Cox Collection sold for $77,675 — an NGC graded MS-62 example in the Stack’s Bowers Galleries April 2013 Hong Kong Auction fetched $50,787.50.

“There were times when there was standing room only during the auction, and to Kent’s point, vintage and classic Chinese coins realized extremely strong prices,” said Richard Ponterio, executive vice president of Stack’s Bowers Galleries.

Offered in a separate catalog was an extensive offering of Asian and Chinese banknotes anchored by The Ernest A. Ikenberry Collection. Hailing from this important property was the top drawing note in the sale, lot 32001 — a Ming Dynasty 400 Cash note — likely the only collectible example. The note brought an impressive $119,500. Another important rarity, a $100 note from the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, dated September 1, 1927, brought $44,812.50.

tin coin

2 pieces Pahang Tin Hat Money, ca. 1864-89 realized US$675 in the auction. A large example (72.59 mm, 113.90 gms) dated AH 1281 (1864) and a smaller example (28.71 mm, 10.09 gms). Each piece has been holed as is usual, but both are in exceptional states of preservation. VERY FINE.

Frosted Freedom Platinum Eagle in auction

A scarce proof error coin, frosted freedom platinum eagle variety is being offered by GreatCollections right now until 27 April 2014, 7:12pm Pacific Time. The 2007-W platinum American Eagle quarter-ounce coin graded by PCGS as Proof-70 DCAM and it’s also identified on the label as Frosted FREEDOM.

frosted freedom

The 2007-W $25 Quarter-Ounce Platinum Statue of Liberty coin has the word FREEDOM in frosted type, as opposed to the mirror finish. Mint Officials did not believe the word FREEDOM was prominent enough and decided to change the finish of the letters at the last minute.

"What's special about this variety is that the U.S. Mint acknowledged how they were produced and how they inadvertently distributed the error coins to buyers at random. Only 21 were minted and this is the second one discovered," said Ian Russell, President/founder of GreatCollections.

Frosted Freedom

The variety was discovered in 2011 and prompted the U.S. Mint to confirm that 21 of the error were produced of the $25 Quarter Ounce and $50 Half Ounce. Twelve coins were produced of the $100 One Ounce. GreatCollections first learned about this current coin earlier this year, and it is the only coin graded by PCGS for any of the three denominations.

PCGS included the Quarter-Ounce Frosted FREEDOM coin in their Top 100 Modern Coins Registry Set, where it is ranked #16.

Russell continued: "The coin is being sold unreserved and initial spirited bidding has taken the bid to over $25,000, ensuring a new PCGS record auction price for the platinum series. We are always proud to be the auction company of choice for U.S. coin rarities."

1968 50 sen Milled Edge realized RM19,942

Today, A finest known example of a 1968 50 sen Milled Edge realized SGD7,670 (RM19,942) including buyer premium in Collectibles Auction Asia CAA Auction No. 3 at Landmark Village Hotel, Singapore. The mint error coin set a new record for Malaysia most expensive circulation coin in auction. The previous record holder is a 1969 50 sen Milled edge coin graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) Au-55, sold by the same auctioneer on 19 October 2013.

50 sen 1968

The 1968 Milled edge 50 sen is a collection of Mr. Wong Hon Sum graded MS66 by NGC. I am a little bit shock when I received an email asking me to confirm the news from a friend. When I login to Facebook, I saw Mr. Dickson Niew a blogger at www.fakesilvercoin announce the realized price for top Malaysian coins in that auction.

To all newbies, the coin is not a normal 50 sen security edge (50 sen berparit) but an error coin with a milled edge. Officially, the coins for 1967-1969 are supposed to be in security edge but there are some coins minted with a wrong plachet.

 malaysia coin

Searching for more information about the 50 sen Milled edge at the NGC Malaysia coin census, confirm that the coin is the best grade so far (the only one with MS66) for Milled edge 50 sen 1968.

I am not sure who is the winner but I sure the news will make my phone and most Malaysian coin dealers phone will be ringing 24/7 for a few months to come. I am sure newbies who heard this news will be contacting any coin dealers and collectors phone number/email/Facebook that they can find and asked us to buy their Very Fine 50 sen 1967, 1968 and 1969 for over RM10K. I already shared what I knew in this article; information about Malaysia 50 sen 1967, 1968 & 1969. Please read them carefully and understand what is Milled Edge and Security Edge before you jump into conclusion that your coin price can get over RM10K.

1 sen bronze

Other coins that worth to mention in the auction is a 1 sen 1976 Bronze PCGS MS 64 RB with a realized price SGD4,720 (including buyer premium), RM12,210. The coin also broke the previous record for Malaysia 1 sen 1976 bronze of RM7,550 sold in Monetarium Singapore auction on 27 Mac 2013. The normal coin 1 sen 1976 is made of copper clad steel. These 1 sen 1976 bronze is actually a copper coin, a wrong metal error made in the mint. To anyone who want to know how you can check the coin with magnet test, you can read it in my article; How to detect 1 sen 1976 Bronze.

1967 proof

Another shocking news for Malaysia Numismatic community regarding the auction is a Malaysia 1967 proof set coins which realised SGD4,012 (including buyer premium), RM10,379. The official Malaysia proof set of 5 pcs coins come with original box and the coins graded by NGC: 1 sen (PF65RD); 5 Sen (PF66); 10 sen (PF65); 20 sen (PF65); 50 sen (PF65). With only 500 set produced, a coin set in a high grade like this is very hard to find.

I will share with you more update about the CAA Auction 3/2014 later.

1921 George V 50 cents sold for US$141000

A rare 1921 George V specimen 50 cents sold for US$141,000 in Heritage Auctions' $15 million world and ancient coin auctions held April 10-12 and 15-16 at the Chicago International Coin Fair (CICF) and online. The coin from the Prager Collection of Canadian Coins, considered one of the most covetable Canadian coins in existence, with very few pieces known to exist, the George V was dubbed "the King of Canadian Coins" by James Charlton, author of the primary Canadian numismatics reference book.

George V
1921 George V specimen 50 cents

Also known as the "1921 Half Dollar", the coin originally struck in the respectable quantity of 206,398 pieces, all or the majority of this mintage was never released into circulation due to waning demand for the denomination. Resultantly, production of half dollars was suspended for much of the 1920s, only to begin again in 1929. To facilitate this re-introduction, some 480,392 half dollars in mint reserve, including an amount presumed to be near the entire mintage of 1921 pieces, were melted for purposes of re-coining the silver. Today, approximately 75 examples of the 1921 date are thought to survive with some debate existing as to how many, if not all of the survivors, are specimen strikes that were made available to Ottawa mint visitors.

"We continue to see strength across the board in the world and ancient coin markets. Premium quality coins often doubled or tripled estimates at the auction," said Cristiano Bierrenbach, Vice President of Heritage. "Heritage has a strong relationship with the CICF and we are happy to see an incredibly well attended auction both in Chicago and on HA.com."

A must have coin checking habits for collectors

Do you know what to look for in a coins? My blog readers always ask me the same question about a way to check coins that they have in their piggy bank collections. To make sure you don't lose all the rare coins and valuable rare coins, you need to develop coin checking habits from the very beginning. A good magnifier is a must, at least a 7x magnifier to check for the coins surface for machine doubling error.

coin checking

For a start, always try to follow these steps if you received a coins in your pocket change, practice make perfect.

A must have coin checking habits for collectors

1. Sort your coins according to their denominations
When you sort your coins according to their denominations, it will be easy for you to scan the coins. You can see the difference from one coin to another when you check them in groups.

2. Always check the years of the coin
Certain years in Malaysia coins denomination are already worth more then their face value because of low mintage. You can check the list of Malaysia rare coins in my article; List of Malaysia valuable coins. If you find them, separate them and check them later for varieties and errors.

3. Look at the coins inscriptions
Look carefully at the coin lettering for something odd or unusual. Turn the coin around and look at it from different angles. Check carefully for missing letters, doubling, and other oddities in the inscriptions.

4. Look at the coins abnormalities
Look for anything abnormal about the coin. Is there anything missing on your coins? Can you see any cracks, cud or missing elements?

5. Check the coin edge
Some coins like the 50 sen 1967, 50 sen 1968 and 50 sen 1969 have two type of edge that give a lot of difference in term of their price. Make sure you check the coin edge for the early 50 sen for Milled Edge type since their price are more expensive then the Security Edge type. You can learn more about it in my article; information about 50 sen 1967, 68 & 69.

6. Check the coin die rotation
Some coin have a die rotation error. You need to practice checking the rotation of any coins that you handle. Slowly inspect the coin turning it from the top to the bottom not from one side to another. If the orientation of the coin is on the right side up at starting point, the orientation after the turn should also be on the right side up. A 180 degree rotation errors is the most valuable die rotation error.

7. Set aside anything that looks odd
If you find any coins that looks odd or suspicious, set them aside. When you have time to check them, make sure you look at the coins under good lighting with strong magnification. If you find anything that you don't understand, try to ask in a numismatic forum/group or try to Google it for answer.

8. Magnet test for 1 sen coins
You don't need to do magnet test for any 1 sen coins that you can find. If you find any 1 sen 1970, 1 sen 1973 or 1 sen 1976, make sure you do the magnet test. Wrong metal coins are worth more then the normal coins. You can learn more about it in my article; what coins need to test with magnet.

Rebecca Adlington

The highly decorated and record breaking sportswoman was invited to strike a gold Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games 50p in her capacity as an official ambassador for the Games, which start in less than 85 days. Rebecca Adlington, from Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, won two bronze medals in the London 2012 Olympics following on from her double medal win at the Beijing Olympics.

Commonwealth Games

Designers Alex Loudon and Dan Flashman took two of the most iconic sports – athletics and cycling – and added the Saltire of Scotland and lettering inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh to create a dynamic design for the coin.

Rebecca Adlington said, “As an ambassador for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, I'm absolutely thrilled to have been invited to strike the gold 50p coin celebrating the event. It was particularly special for me to visit The Royal Mint because I got to see the very building where my London 2012 medals were struck.”

“I am very excited about this year’s Commonwealth Games because it’s great to have such a large scale sporting event at home again. It gives the crowd an opportunity to show their support for the British competitors, particularly the younger athletes, and it should be a great atmosphere. I am particularly looking forward to commentating on the swimming and being able to attend the opening ceremony for the first time, because I’ve always been competing before, and it promises to be a fantastic start to the Games.”

Shane Bissett, The Royal Mint’s Director of Commemorative Coin and Bullion, added, “For over 1,000 years, The Royal Mint has been producing British coins that have recorded the passing of history, documenting changes in monarchs, customs and national themes. We are thrilled to be able to show our support for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and have the opportunity to commemorate this historical event.

“People can expect to see the new 50p coins in circulation from July when the Games begin, but we wanted to give Rebecca a sneak preview and have the opportunity to strike a gold coin bearing the new design. It was also our pleasure to show Rebecca where her own London 2012 Olympic medals were made and for our staff to find out more about her impressive achievements and her role as a Games ambassador.”

honey bee coin

Only the female bee has a venomous sting which is also called its defence thorn. During the course of evolution this tool developed from the egg laying organ. The sting is used to lay eggs, as well as for defence purposes. The bee’s ecological importance is immense since it not only produces tons of honey, but is also the most important pollinator worldwide. Therefore, the continuing depletion of the bee population could have serious consequences for mankind. Not only biodiversity but also our successful harvest is therefore endangered. According to calculations, the reduction in bee numbers could lead to annual financial losses of billions of Euros.
