$20 RMS Empress of Ireland 1 oz Fine Silver coin

$

The Royal Canadian Mint has launched a $20 RMS Empress of Ireland 1 oz. Fine silver coin to commemorate the 100 years of the greatest maritime disaster in Canadian history-the sinking of RMS Empress of Ireland. The 99.99% pure silver features a stunning colour portrait, framed within the coastline of the St. Lawrence seaway, and shows the RMS Empress of Ireland moments before her collision with the Storstad.

 RMS Empress of Ireland

The $20 RMS Empress of Ireland coin designed by Canadian artist John Horton, who uses selective paint to recreate the imminent collision of RMS Empress of Ireland and the Norwegian collier Storstad during the early morning hours of May 29, 1914. Rolling in from the coast (engraved in the background), the thick fog comes between the two ships in the coloured centre portion of the image field. The shadowy image of the Storstad emerges from the right side of the image, its sharp bow in line to make contact with the Empress's starboard side. The passenger ship's stern and funnels are partially unobstructed by the fog in this image to provide a glimpse of the liner before tragedy would send it to its final resting place on the bottom of the St. Lawrence River.

Built in Scotland by the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Empress of Ireland was launched on January 27, 1906. Measuring 172 metres long and 20 metres wide, the Canadian Pacific Railway steamship was widely regarded at the time as one of the fastest and most comfortable passenger ships for the transatlantic journey between England and Canada.

On the afternoon of May 28, 1914, the Empress left its berth in Quebec's harbour for its first summer voyage to Liverpool. In the early morning hours of May 29, the liner was steaming down the St. Lawrence River near Pointe-au-Père when at 1:40 a.m., the Norwegian collier Storstad was sighted at about eight miles to starboard. Both crews attempted to anticipate one another's course as a thick fog engulfed both ships, forcing Captain Henry George Kendall to bring the Empress to a stop. But minutes later, the Storstad emerged from the fog at a mere 30 metres from the Empress – it was too late for either ship to alter its course and at 1:55 a.m., the Storstad's reinforced hull ploughed into the centre of the Empress. Of the 1,477 passengers onboard RMS Empress of Ireland, 1,012 perished including 134 children.

In the early 20th century the Black Rhinoceros, Diceros bicornis, was the most plentiful of all Rhino species across the African continent. Between 1970 and 1992, their numbers were severely reduced by over 95% due to organised poaching and black market demand for their horns. By 1993, only 2,300 survived in the wild. Intensive anti-poaching efforts over recent years have had encouraging results, however, the increase in numbers is slow. In 2013, the IUCN estimated that approximately 5,055 Black Rhinoceros live in Eastern and Central Africa.

In July 2013, New Zealand Mint has released an Endangered Species - Venerable Collared Lizard 1 oz silver coin.

Most Expensive Britain coin sold in auction

On 8th May 2014, an Edward VIII 1937 Gold Proof Sovereign sold for £516,000 (US$870,027), a new record for the most expensive Britain coin sold in auction. The coin is part of The Hemisphere Collection of Gold Sovereigns at A.H. Baldwin & Sons Ltd, the first complete monarchical collection of gold Sovereigns ever to be offered at auction.

Edward VIII

The previous record for the Britain most expensive coin hold by Edward III 1344 Double Leopard sold on 26 June 2006 for a staggering £460,000 (US$841,800) by Spink London.

The King Edward VIII, Gold Proof Sovereign, dated 1937, was the only single example available to collectors anywhere in the world. Never produced for currency use, due to the controversial abdication of King Edward VIII, just 326 days after his accession, the coin originally formed part of a proof set of proposed coinage, the designs of which would have been minted and put into circulation after the King's coronation in 1937.

Most Expensive Coin

After the death of Edward's father, King George V, in January 1936, Edward ascended the throne and proposals for his coinage were produced. Controversially he refused to follow the coinage traditions of facing in the opposite direction to his predecessor and insisted on using his left facing profile that he preferred. The tradition was started with King Charles II who wished to face the opposite way to Oliver Cromwell, and had been followed ever since until Edward.

This is only the third time this example has appeared at public auction, and the first time it has been seen for sale in the UK since its first auction outing in 1984 when it achieved £40,000 (hammer). Today a tense battle between bidders in the room saw this exceptional coin finally settle at £516,000, it sold to an anonymous buyer in the room. [Lot 2079]

Steve Hill, Director of British Coins at Baldwin's said: "It has been a pleasure to be involved with partly forming, completely cataloguing and today selling this monumental collection. For the first time The Hemisphere Collection brought together Sovereigns from every Monarch from the first Sovereign struck under the reign of Henry VII to those of our current Monarch, Elizabeth II. The Edward VIII gold proof sovereign that sold today, for a record breaking price, was a fitting celebration of the iconic British denomination, both the owner who formed the collection and Baldwin's are thrilled with the result.

Elsewhere in the sale prices were driven high by a room full or bidders that were competing with buyers online and on the phone. An Elizabeth II, Gold Proof Sovereign dated 1953, another extreme rarity, sold for £384,000 [Lot 2081] and topping the hammered coins was an impressive Henry VII Gold Sovereign, 1502-1504, which sold for £120,000. [Lot 2001]

The Hemisphere Collection was part of Baldwin's three day May auction calendar which included The Arielle Collection Part Two, The Åke Lindén Collection of European Coins and Indian Coins from the collections of Dr Paul Stevens and Åke Lindén. The catalogue and results can be found online at www.baldwin.co.uk

A 1876 George I Greece 100 gold Drachmai sold for £216,000 in A.H. Baldwin & Sons Ltd's sale of European Coins from the Åke Lindén Collection on Wednesday 7th May 2014, a new world record for any Modern Greek coin. This exceptional rarity was from the collection of Swedish numismatist Åke Lindén, one of the world's most prolific coin collectors. It sold in the latest of a calendar of worldwide auctions hosted by Baldwin's presenting Lindén's vast and esteemed collection.

George I

Dimitri Loulakakis, Director of World Coins at A. H. Baldwin & Sons Ltd said: "Baldwin's are pleased to see the continued successful dispersal of Åke Lindén's collection, the price this George I 1876 Gold 100-Drachmai achieved illustrates the rigorous attitude Lindén had towards collecting top quality rarities and also the buoyancy of the current European coin market. We are thrilled with the outcome of the sale."

With a mintage of only 76, the George I 1876 Gold 100-Dramchai is the very rarest of all regular issue coins of Modern Greece. It bears the Order of the Saviour on the reverse below the royal arms, the oldest and highest decoration awarded by the Modern Greek State.

100-Dramchai
George I 1876 Gold 100-Dramchai

Competitive bidding from buyers online, in the room and on the phone sent the exceptional coin sailing past its pre-sale estimate to sell for £216,000 to an anonymous internet bidder.

Also achieving an exceptional price was an 1864 Vittorio Emanuele II, Gold 50-Lire, struck in Torino. It was the rarest one-year coin of the whole Italian Kingdom series, with a mintage of only 103, and was one of the last coins to be minted in The Kingdom of Italy before it joined the Latin Monetary Union (LMU). A precursor to the Euro, the LMU attempted to unify the countries of Europe under one currency that would be interchangeable across the nations.

Vittorio Emanuele II
1863 Vittorio Emanuele II silver 20 Centesimi

Also from the Kingdom of Italy and achieving a large price tag was the smallest coin in the sale. The 1863, Vittorio Emanuele II, silver 20-Centesimi, which was struck in Torino, sold for £90,000 [Lot 1432]. Known in Italian as the "Stemmino" this coin is missing from almost every serious collection as all examples were withdrawn from circulation. Of the seven known survivors, this example was by far the finest in private hands.

Friedrich August III
1917 Friedrich August III Silver Proof 3 Mark

Topping the Germany section was the rarest Empire, post 1871, coin, which sold for double its pre-sale estimate of £30,000-40,000. The 1917, Friedrich August III, Silver Proof 3-Mark, was one of only 100 pieces minted and after a fierce bidding battle, finally sold to an internet bidder for £76,800.

Carol I
1868 Carol I Gold Pattern Proof 20 Lei

Elsewhere in the sale coins from Romania achieved excellent prices. Of particular note was an 1868, Carol I Gold Pattern Proof 20-Lei. This, the most celebrated coin of the Romanian series had a mintage of only 100, a portion of which were deposited into the foundations of Prince Carol I's Peles Castle in 1875, the remainder being distributed to his friends and VIPs. This example was the finest known survivor and sold for £78,000.

The Åke Lindén Collection of European Coins was part of Baldwin's three day May auction calendar which included The Arielle Collection Part Two, The Hemisphere Collection of Gold Sovereigns and Indian Coins from the collections of Dr Paul Stevens and Åke Lindén. The rare Edward VIII 1937 Gold Proof Sovereign, the most expensive British coin sold in auction won by former Adelaide man Jordan Lott. He paid a record £516,000 for the gold sovereign featuring the head of Edward VIII, one of only six “proof” coins — and one of only two in private hands — struck in 1936 to commemorate the king’s intended coronation in 1937.

Jordan Lott

Mr Lott attended St Peter’s College in Adelaide until 1976 is the managing director of Regal Rare Coins, one of the biggest pawnbrokers in the UK and is featured in the British version of the TV series Pawn Stars.

Jordan Lott told MailOnline: "I was the first to place a bid and I was determined to be the last".

"In the world of coins, it's the coin's story that makes it important, and this coin has the most fantastic story".

"It's also beautiful and in mint condition - I would have paid another £50,000 to make sure I got it".

He said: 'It last sold in Tokyo in 1984 for £40,000 and I wish I'd bought it then. British coins are seriously undervalued.'

The Edward VIII gold sovereign is sometimes known as the “coin for the king that never was". In December 1936 Edward abdicated in order to marry US divorcee Wallis Simpson, before the sovereigns were made, making the coins redundant.

Helvetic Mint from Switzerland has released another oval shaped high relief coins with a Nieu 2014 Housefly 1 oz silver coin. The .999 Silver coin is minted using a special minting technique with fully printed XL Relief and 5C photorealistic digital printing. Only 700 pieces will be minted by the mint and the coins will be available in July 2014.

Two high relief coins by Helvetic Mint; Blue Iguana and The Crocodile has been a hot item among collectors because they have a very low mintage and the real coin itself is more beautiful the what you can see in pictures.

Housefly coin

The coin reverse show a High relief image of the head and eyes of a housefly and the skin on background. The coin obverse show portraits of Queen Elizabeth II by Ralph Maklouf.

Houseflies have dark gray or gray and yellow bodies with dark lines. The main part of their body has 8 segments in males and 9 segments in females. Females have 5 segments of their abdomen visible all the time. She sticks out the other 4 when she lays her eggs. This way, she can lay eggs under the surface. Females are a little bit bigger than males. Like all flies, they only have one pair of translucent wings for flying and the second pair are only used for balance. Houseflies are 4 to 8 mm long, and are 6.35 mm long on average.

Houseflies eyes are compound organs that are comprised of thousands of individual lenses. Compound eyes are capable of detecting both the polarization of light and color spectrums unseen by humans. Houseflies eyes can recognize even the slightest ovements in a wide field. This allows the fly to see a far wider range, as well as detect and react to movement at a quicker pace than species with simple eyes. This is the reason that it is extremely difficult to swat a housefly. Houseflies are meticulous in their grooming, particularly around their eyes. These flies use their forelegs to remove any material that has come into contact with the eyes.

‘G for George’ was an active Avro Lancaster heavy bomber which was constructed in 1942 and flew 90 operational missions over Nazi-occupied territory during the Second World War. Its affectionate nickname was the result of the prominent ‘G’ in its squadron code, and the plane was both empowering and uniting for over 10,000 airmen. Servicemen crewed this aircraft in RAF Bomber Command until its retirement in 1944. It now sits proudly on display in the Australian War Memorial’s ANZAC Hall, as an embodiment of the strength, endurance and sacrifices of those who served in the war.

The intricate detailing on the G for George coin depicts its active service, flying 90 operational missions before its retirement in 1944. On the 70th anniversary of its retirement, this coin serves as a lasting memento of its legendary service.

Today, Perth Mint has released set of exquisite coins depicting six mythical horses, Horses of Lore & Legend 1oz Silver Proof Coins. Each coin is struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality. No more than 1,500 of the Horses of Lore and Legend 1oz Silver Proof Three-Coin Set will be released by the mint.

Horses of Lore

Each coin’s reverse features two of the six horses of Lore and Legend. Together the coins celebrate the Hippocamp, Kelpie, Slepnir, Unicorn, Qilin, and Pegasus. Each coin is issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu and features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination on its obverse.

Hippocamp Kelpie

Hippocamp
With the head of a horse and the tail of a sea creature, the hippocamp (or hippocampus) was thought to be the adult form of the common seahorse. Their brave and faithful character made them the ideal partner for the heroes and gods of antiquity.

These mythical creatures were first depicted on coins around four hundred years before the Christian era, powering the chariots of important ancient Greek, Phoenician and Etruscan sea gods including Poseidon. The hippocamp united with its master’s cause, helping many classical heroes to victory on the battlefield. Their strength and loyalty were legendary, and earned them a central place beside the important characters in artists’ depictions of classical tales.

Kelpie
Mythological British tales describe the kelpie as a blue, white, green or black horse spirit, which lives in the rivers and streams of Scotland. With slick wet skin, a dripping mane and tail, the kelpie was a sly creature that would trick its human prey into a watery grave.

Wandering calmly beside a waterway, the kelpie would tempt a weary traveller onto its back. Once mounted, its skin transformed, becoming so sticky, riders were at once trapped; unable to free themselves from the horse’s body. The kelpie immediately charged at great speed into the depths of the water, drowning the rider who was never to be seen again.

Sleipnir Unicorn

Sleipnir
Sleipnir is an eight-legged horse found in ancient Norse poetry and mythology. Of tremendous strength and agility, he was given to Odin, father of all the gods and men, who rode him through the air and sea. Sleipnir is the son of Loki, god of mischief, and the great stallion Svaoilfari.

Sleipnir’s eight legs represent the eight directions of the compass. They allowed Odin to travel between the world of the gods, the world of man, and the underworld.

His name refers to the great speed and power which glides him across the Earth.

Unicorn
From the fifth century before the Christian era, sightings of the unicorn in the remote parts of India and Germany have fascinated scholars and artists alike. This graceful white horse, with a single horn spiralling to a point from the middle of its forehead appears in the Bible, art and ancient accounts of natural history.

The unicorn is a wild horse that can be tamed only by a maiden. As a symbol for Christ during the Middle Ages, the search for the unicorn was akin to the quest to find the Holy Grail. Their horns were highly prized, and said to purify water and cure illness. Throughout the years, the unicorn has come to represent purity, strength and courtly love. They continue to appear on coats of arms, symbolising the potency of nature.

Qilin Pegasus

Qilin
Chinese records from the fifth century before Christianity describe the qilin as a horse-dragon hybrid covered in flames, with a horn protruding from its forehead. Similar to the unicorn in the West, the Eastern qilin is thought to appear directly before or immediately following the passing of a wise ruler. Legend has it that the birth of Confucius was foretold by the arrival of a qilin.

Often dazzling in appearance, the qilin’s body is as bright and colourful as precious metals, stars, fire, water or gemstones. It is a symbol of justice, wisdom and harmony. Through their noble actions, the qilin exemplifies the very best of the human spirit.

Pegasus
Ancient Greek tales describe Pegasus as a white winged horse that sprung to life from the monster Medusa’s head, after it was removed by the hero Perseus. Upon seeing Perseus kill Medusa, her two sisters chased after the hero seeking revenge, whereupon Pegasus lifted Perseus onto his back, flying him away to safety.

A gentle creature, known to be helpful and kind, Pegasus came to symbolise wisdom, fame and the source of creativity used by poets.

Upon his ascent to heaven, as a reward for his service and loyalty, Zeus transformed Pegasus into a constellation, to be forever admired in the night sky.
