Today, Bernama reported that Bank of China (BOC) will launch Panda Gold Coins to commemorate the 40 years of strong bilateral relations between Malaysia and China. The Chinese Panda Bullion Gold Coin will be issued by the People's Bank of China in weight of 1 ounce, 1/2 ounces, 1/4 ounces, 1/10 ounces and 1/20 ounces.

Fuwa and Fengyi

The bank said the launch was also in conjunction with the celebration of Malaysia-China 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the arrival of Chinese pandas Fuwa and Fengyi to Malaysia recently.

"It is one of the world's top five bullion coins for investments along with the South African Krugerrand Gold Coins, Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins, American Eagle Gold Coins and Australian Gold Nugget Bullion Coins," said the bank.

"Traditionally, gold is the preferred financial instrument to withstand inflation, reckoned by its characteristics for stability in value, high liquidity, storable and portable, wide global acceptance.

"Gold coins and gold bars are the top-picks among all the primary physical gold investment in the world," the bank said.

No pictures or other extra information about the coin design that I can found in Bank of China website.

Rumours about the Malaysia giant panda coins has been going on in internet since last year. Early rumours said that the coins will be minted in gold and silver. Some friends said the coin will have a design of a tiger and a panda with a hisbiscus flower and bamboo. Most friends said that the coin main design should be Fuwa and Fengyi. People also talk that the coin will be release by China Gold Coin Incorporation.

If you have any information or pictures about the Malaysia Panda Gold Coins, please share them with us. Thank you.

The term megafauna (mega meaning 'very large' - fauna meaning 'animals') describes a range of super-sized vertebrates - animals with backbones - that emerged after the dinosaurs. Favoured by conditions at that time, they were able to grow much larger than is common today. Many megafauna species became extinct during the Pleistocene, an epoch that lasted until around 12,000 years ago.

Thylacoleo carnifex is the fabled marsupial lion, which was the largest known marsupial carnivore. The animal was powerfully built, with strong jaws and very strong forelimbs. The species possessed sharp claws, well suited to securing prey and for climbing trees. The first digits (thumbs) on each hand were semi-opposable and bore an enlarged claw. The Thylacoleo also had massive shearing teeth, a unique trait among marsupials.

1851 Humbert $50 Gold to be offered by Spink USA

A 1851 United States Assay Office $50 Gold "Slug" (Humbert Gold) or ingots will be offered by Spink USA along with a number of other U.S. rare gold rarities will cross the block in New York on June 18 when Spink auctions the "Forest Park Collection". Formed largely in Philadelphia in the 1950's and 1960's, the collection features a wonderful selection of U.S. coins, medals, tokens, and paper money along with a select group of ancient and world coins.

$50 Gold Slug

The Augustus Humbert U.S. Assay Office $50 Gold piece (lot 2499) is graded NGC MS 61 and estimated at $150,000-200,000. In March of 2014 a PCGS MS60 realized $282,000 in a Heritage sale.

A little bit history about United States Assay Office $50 Gold "Slug" by Spink:

"On January 24, 1848, James W. Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. Over 300,000 people migrated to California and many of them converged on San Francisco creating an economic boom of major proportions. This boom created an economic problem of major proportions, eventually bringing about the minting of these legendary "Californians,""quintuple eagles,""five eagle pieces," or "slugs" - the $50 pieces produced by Augustus Humbert, United States Assayer of Gold in 1851.

The economic problem arose from the simple fact that there was no United States mint in California. There was no way for miners, prospectors or merchants to convert their gold into coins, and this made it extremely difficult to conduct simple business transactions. Petitions sprang up urging the state to set up a government assay office, but this suggestion was opposed by bankers, gold dust dealers and merchants who were making a good living buying or accepting gold in trade at a large discount.

The solution to the problem was the establishment of a United States Mint in San Francisco, but that would take an act of Congress. Opposition came from the states that already had United States Mints - Penssylvania, North Carolina, Louisiana and Georgia. A compromise was reached, and an act was passed in 1850, establishing a Federal Assay Office. The act authored "ingots" of $50 " to be struck, consisting of refined gold "….of uniform fineness…." Legends were to include the words "LIBERTY" and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." These "ingots" would circulate like Federal coins, but their metallurgic composition differed from the gold coins that were issued by the official U. S. Mints. Copper, nitric acid, sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acids were necessary in order to create the proper metallic content, and these raw materials were not available on the West Coast.

Technically, the United States Assay Office was not a U. S. Mint, but the officials at the Philadelphia Mint treated Humbert as if he were a branch-mint supervisor. The production of the master dies and hubs for the "ingots" was carried out under the direct supervision of Mint officials. The "ingots" circulated side by side with U.S. and foreign gold coins, and they were acceptable for the payment of Customs duties."

U.S. Assay Office

1852 U.S. Assay Office $10 piece (lot 2500), graded NGC MS 61, estimated at 12,000-16,000

$20 humbert

1853 U.S. Assay Office $20 (lot 2501), graded NGC AU 58, estimated at 10,000-15,000

On 3rd June 2014, Perth Mint has released second coins in The Gods of Olympus series: Poseidon 2014 2oz Silver High Relief Coin. Only 1,500 of the Gods of Olympus – Poseidon Coin will be released by The Perth Mint. The 2 oz of 99.9% pure silver issued as legal tender of the Government of Tuvalu. Poseidon Coin
Poseidon: God of Sea

The coin’s reverse depicts a bearded Poseidon riding the waves on his chariot pulled by two hippocampi, clutching his trident, with dolphins porpoising in the background. The design includes the inscription POSEIDON and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. The coin obverse show the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2014 year-date, and the monetary denomination.

Historically, Poseidon was always portrayed as a mature man with a fully-grown beard, and equipped with his best known weapon, the trident, which he used to shake the earth, shatter rocks and create storms, causing devastating earthquakes and tsunamis. His other symbols include a bull, dolphins, horse and fish.

Poseidon was one of six children and the second of three brothers, Zeus, Poseidon and Hades, born to Rhea and Cronus, the ruler of the Titans. Having overthrown their father, the three brothers divided the universe between them. Zeus took control of the heavens, Poseidon the sea, and Hades the underworld. After being given the sea to rule over, Poseidon built for himself a spectacular underwater palace on the ocean floor made from coral and gems. He was often depicted riding atop the ocean waves, sometimes on his chariot pulled by sea-horses, also known as hippocampi.

In ancient Greek mythology, Poseidon was worshipped as the God of the Sea. Adept at gathering clouds and creating violent storms, Poseidon was responsible for countless shipwrecks and the drowning of many souls, yet he also held the power to grant a ship a successful voyage, and to save those in danger. He is also often referred to as the ‘earth-shaker’ due to his penchant for causing earthquakes.

List of Official Government Mints around the world's:

In the list for Central Bank, I have added the current currency names, sign and ISO 4217 Code. The ISO 4217 code list is used in banking and business globally. The first two letters of the code are the two letters of ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes (which are also used as the basis for national top-level domains on the Internet) and the third is usually the initial of the currency itself. So Japan's currency code is JPY—JP for Japan and Y for yen. This eliminates the problem caused by the names dollar, franc and pound being used in dozens of different countries, each having significantly differing values. Also, if a currency is revalued, the currency code's last letter is changed to distinguish it from the old currency.

They're some Central Bank in this link don't have any website link because their site are down when I wrote this article.

Garret Specimen 1804 dollar offered by Stack’s Bowers

One of the world famous 1804 silver dollar the “King of American Coins,” will be offered in the Stack’s Bowers Galleries official auction in conjunction with the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair of Money in Rosemont, Illinois on August 8. The beautiful coin is the famous T. Harrison Garrett Class III coin acquired in 1883 and held by the family until 1942, when it passed to The Johns Hopkins University.

Will this coin make it to the Top 10 world's most expensive coins list?

1804 dollar
Garret Specimen 1804 dollar

Varieties of 1804 Dollars
Two different reverse dies were used to make the 1804-dated dollars, each mated with the same obverse.
  • Class I 1804-dated dollars: Reverse die with E in STATES over a cloud.
  • Class II 1804-dated dollars: Reverse die with E in STATES over junction between two clouds. Plain edge. Made in 1859.
  • Class III 1804-dated dollars: Reverse die as preceding. Lettered edge. Made circa late 1850s onward, last date of manufacture unknown, but possibly into the late 1860s or early 1870s.

The Garrett Specimen was made in 1859 or later as noted above. By circa 1875 it was in the hands of Captain John W. Haseltine of Philadelphia, one of the leading rare coin dealers and auction catalogers of the era, who stated that he had found it in the inventory of Koch & Co., professional numismatist in Vienna. Haseltine sold it to O.H. Berg, a Baltimore collector. On May 23 to 24, 1883, Haseltine cataloged and sold The Berg Collection, where the dollar was lot 568.

The buyer was George W. Cogan, New York City dealer, who acted as the agent for T. Harrison Garrett of Baltimore. Garrett, a connoisseur par excellence, became interested in coins while he was a student at Princeton in 1864. By 1883 he had assembled the largest private collection in United States, a cabinet that included coins from ancient to modern and had outstanding specimens of most of the great American rarities. In 1888 Garrett died in a boating accident aboard his yacht in Chesapeake Bay. The collection was then passed to his estate, and later to one of his sons, Robert Garrett (who as a star athlete won the first American gold medal in the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896). In 1919, Robert transferred ownership to another brother, Ambassador John Work Garrett, who lived in the family mansion, Evergreen House. After his passing, the collection was gifted in 1942 to The Johns Hopkins University.

In the 1960s, the collection was under the curatorship of Sarah Elizabeth Freeman, then Carl W.A. Carlson, and Susan Tripp. The 1804 dollar was kept at Evergreen for a long period of time, but was later taken with most of the rest of The Garrett Collection to a subterranean bank vault in downtown Baltimore for safekeeping. As security and other expenses prevented the collection from being available for study, the University opted to sell it at auction to raise funds for the improvement of Evergreen House, by then a conference and study center, and the restoration of Homewood, Charles Carroll’s mansion on the grounds of the University. Carroll was the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. On March 26 and 27, 1980, in Part II of The Garrett Collection, our predecessor firm Bowers and Ruddy Galleries presented the 1804 dollar as lot 698. The buyer was the partnership of Pullen & Hanks. Later the coin changed hands several times, the details of which will be given in the forthcoming auction catalog along with many other aspects of the history of “the King of American Coins.”

Q. David Bowers, Chairman Emeritus of Stack’s Bowers Galleries, noted: “Over the years many rarities come back to us after being off the market, sometimes for years or decades. It is tremendous pleasure to see this great 1804 again. It brings back memories of my working with Susan Tripp and The Johns Hopkins University from 1979 to 1981, including many visits to Baltimore. Its buyer will gain a rich link with numismatic tradition and history.”

The Garrett 1804 dollar will be on display at several upcoming conventions, including the Long Beach Coin Expo, June Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo, and the Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Auction of the ANA World’s Fair of Money.

This is a list of my Top 25 coin websites, blogs & forums that I frequently visit. There are thousands of coin websites on the internet but I only frequently visit sites on this list.

Do you read some of the websites in my list? They're many information give by them about numismatic, rare coins, prices guides, popular coins, gold coins, silver coins, coin collecting and most of them provide an updated coin news daily.

I know they're few new coin blogs that are trying to enter the coin community in the internet. I welcome them but I don't share their site in here, unless they have been in the web for over a year and rank well in Google search. Hopefully some of them will be in my list next year.

The only problem that I had to face is that most of blogs and websites only talk about US coins. They're few blogs and websites actively talk about other countries coins. Most of them will be stop posting any new article after a year or two. Most probably they don't have time to write an article or a very low visitor has demotivated them.

Anglo-Saxon silver penny-a clue for murder

An Anglo-Saxon silver penny might be a clue for murder of an East Anglian king by a neighbouring monarch. The 1,200 year-old coin minted during the reign of Æthelberht II has been been found in a Sussex field by a metal detectorist. The unique coin will be auctioned at Dix Noonan Webb, in London on 11 June 2014, when it is expected to fetch £15,000 to £20,000.

clue for murder

The beautiful coin found by Darrin Simpson, a 48 year-old pest control specialist from Eastbourne, Sussex, who has been a metal detectorist for 12 years. He found the coin in an unidentified site in Sussex March this year.

“I thought it was a Saxon coin, the first one I had found, and I was very happy about that,” said Mr Simpson. It was not until he contacted the Early Medieval Corpus of Coin Finds at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge that he realised the full importance of his discovery. “It was a bit of a shock really, I couldn’t sleep for two nights after it was identified,” he said. “The condition is really good. This is a unique coin. I doubt if I will ever find anything better.”

Æthelberht II coin

The coin is only the fourth ever found from the reign of Æthelberht II, a shadowy figure who ruled East Anglia in the late 8th-century. The other three are all in museums and have a different design. The coin found by Mr Simpson is the first to have Æthelberht’s name and the title REX on the same side.

“This new discovery is an important and unexpected addition to the numismatic history of 8th century England,” said Christopher Webb, head of the coins department at Dix Noonan Webb.

Little is known about Æthelberht II’s reign but stories about his piety and his gruesome end ordered by Offa, king of neighbouring Mercia, have survived down the centuries. His reign over the kingdom of East Anglia is thought to have begun in 779. Fifteen years later in 794 he reluctantly agreed to marry Eadburh, Offa’s daughter, and set off to visit her at the Mercian king’s villa at Sutton Walls in Herefordshire.

In a scene worthy of the television series Game of Thrones, Offa’s queen Cynethryth persuaded her husband to have their guest killed and Æthelberht was seized, bound and beheaded. Even in those brutal times, the murder of one king by another was rare.

According to medieval legend, Æthelberht’s severed head later fell off a cart and, after being found in a ditch, restored a blind man’s sight. The dead king was declared a saint and became the focus of a religious cult in East Anglia. Many parish churches in Norfolk and Suffolk are still dedicated to him.

The coin to be auctioned at Dix Noonan Webb may have been one of the reasons for Æthelberht’s terrible end. The East Anglian king is believed to have struck the other three known coins from his reign with the approval of his much more powerful neighbour Offa. However the newly-discovered penny looks like an act of defiance by the increasingly ambitious Æthelberht.

The fact that Æthelberht’s name and the title REX (King) appear on the same side of the coin may have demonstrated a degree of independence that was simply too much for Offa and Cynethryth to bear and they decided to kill him. How this penny came to be in a Sussex field will never be known but its discovery by Mr Simpson provides us with a possible motive for a 1,200 year-old Anglo-Saxon royal murder.

On 11 June 2014, a unique Anglo-Saxon silver penny fetched £78,000 at an auction at Dix Noonan Webb, the international coins and medals specialists, in London. The beautiful coin which provides a clue to the murder of an East Anglian king and which was found in a Sussex field by a metal detectorist is far above the pre-sale estimate of £15,000 to £20,000.

Anglo Saxon

“There was fierce bidding for this unique coin,” said a spokesman for Dix Noonan Webb.

“The price paid shows that the worldwide market for important pieces like this Æthelberht II coin is extremely strong.”

Bidders in the room, on the internet and those who had lodged advance commission bids pushed the price up rapidly from its £17,000 starting point. The final hammer price was £65,000 and by the time buyers’ commission was added the winning bidder paid £78,000.

Darrin Simpson, the 48 year-old metal detectorist from Eastbourne, Sussex who found the coin, said:” It’s fantastic, an amazing result. I am really quite shocked.”

He will give half the money to the Sussex farmer who owns the field where the coin was found and another quarter to the three friends who were detecting with him when he discovered it in early March this year.

The coin auctioned at Dix Noonan Webb may have been one of the reasons for Æthelberht’s terrible end. The East Anglian king is believed to have struck the other three known coins from his reign with the approval of his much more powerful neighbour Offa. However the newly-discovered penny looks like an act of defiance by the increasingly ambitious Æthelberht.

Stack’s Bowers Galleries has announce that the firm has been chosen to market the Pogue Collection. The Pogue family of Dallas, Texas under the connoisseurship of D. Brent Pogue, focuses on copper, silver, and gold coins from the early 1790s to the late 1830s. Many of these extraordinary examples are the finest known today. It is anticipated that the collection will be sold over a series of auctions in New York City over the next several years.

Pogue coins

“For over 30 years, under Brent’s guidance, we participated in the most famous ‘name’ auction sales, many of which were presented by Stack’s Bowers Galleries. Our goal was to develop a cabinet without precedent as to quality and value and I believe that we have accomplished that goal. It is only fitting that the legendary Q. David Bowers and the company’s exceptional staff of numismatic professionals – specifically Harvey and Larry Stack, Christine Karstedt, and Greg Roberts – which we have had the pleasure of working with to build our collection, present it to a new generation of enthusiasts who will enjoy these coins as much as we have. Each is quite special, and most are well documented as to their history and pedigree,” said a Pogue family representative.

“Working with the Pogue family and Brent Pogue on this project is a tremendous honor for me. Sharing the amazing accomplishments of the collectors and the fascinating stories behind the important rarities in definitive reference books and auction catalogs, will be one of the most memorable accomplishments in my career,” stated Q. David Bowers, chairman emeritus.

Christine Karstedt, who has worked with the family for many years, will coordinate the educational displays, auction schedules, and marketing for this amazing collection. She stated, “We are now planning the grand suite of events to present the Pogue Collection, the most significant offering of finest known early coins ever formed. As a look behind the curtain, the cabinet includes two Class I 1804 dollars, including the finest known Imam of Muscat/Childs specimen, the only 1854-S half eagle to come on the market since 1982 when the family acquired this specimen during the Eliasberg sale, and the 1822 half eagle also an Eliasberg rarity and the only one in public hands, to mention just a tiny handful of legendary coins.”
